About The Grief Thief
Introducing the Grief Thief.
The Grief Thief was created by Lisa’s nephew Eric Cleckner to represent the concept of disenfranchised grief. Disenfranchised grief is defined by Kenneth Doka as “grief that persons experience when they incur a loss that is not or cannot be openly acknowledged, socially sanctioned, or publicly mourned.” Some examples include: loss of a pet, death by suicide or drug overdose, loss of a job, divorce, miscarriage or stillbirth, death of someone in a stigmatized peer group (a gang member, someone else using or selling drugs), losses related to domestic violence/intimate partner abuse, etc. Essentially, a Grief Thief robs somebody of their right to grieve by marginalizing their loss. We must stop him!!!!
