Smudged by the Grief Thief

Eric Cleckner (Lisa’s nephew) is a graduate of Syracuse University and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Ad Designn, Advertising, and Graphic Arts and a Master’s Degree in Information Management.  He is the Founder and Designer of Enormous where he designed and produced everything from mobile apps and websites, to virtual reality experiences and animated explainer videos, as well as branding, packaging, art direction, copywriting, icon design, and illustration services.  He is the Co-Founder and Designer of Grafighters which is a platform that enables children to bring their drawings to life. Currently he works for Hudl, a leading software company revolutionizing the way coaches and athletes prepare for and stay ahead of the competition as a Product Designer.

About the Design:  Lisa asked Eric to develop a character or image that would represent the Grief Thief that is based on the concept of disenfranchised grief.  After reading an article about disenfranchised grief, Eric envisioned a Grief Thief would be someone who "doesn't listen and has no empathy...which led me to the idea of using a rock for the Grief Thief.  It has no ears to hear with, it has no heart to feel empathy, and well...it's as dumb as a rock!  I was imagining a piece of coal that leaves a toxic black smudge everywhere it goes.  Just imagine holding a piece of coal, the more you interact with it the dirtier your hands get.  It just leaves you feeling dirty and worthless...I've been a Grief Thief before and I didn't even know it!"
